Inland and along the quieter mouths sit towns that still remember timber, sugar, rail and a river port that once mattered to Queensland. If you only have a weekend, you may only need Maryborough. If you have five days, the hinterland starts to look like the reason the region feels finished.
Maryborough — the river-port city
Maryborough is the one hinterland day that behaves like a city walk. Portside, the Mary River, Queens Park, a mural trail, and museums that include Brennan & Geraghty’s Store (National Trust) and the Customs House / Bond Store precinct. It is commonly about thirty minutes from Hervey Bay and about the same from the airport. The Maryborough page is the long read. The short version: go if you like verandahs and stories; skip it if you only want sand.
Burrum Heads — the quiet alternative
Burrum Heads is the coastal village people name when they want the same sheltered water without Hervey Bay’s length of commerce. River mouth, fishing, a beach, and Burrum Coast National Park in the wider frame. It is a base for some, a day for others. Bauple — mountain in the rear-view

Howard is easy to treat as a fuel stop on the way to the Heads. Give it twenty minutes and it becomes a reminder that mining, rail and small-town Queensland still hold the inland road. None of these towns needs a “best of” badge. They need you to arrive when the door is unlocked and to leave without turning a volunteer Sunday into a content farm. That is the opposite of the spam-era /business/ experiment this rebuild deleted.
How a hinterland day should feel
You should feel the temperature change as you leave the sea breeze. You should see verandah shadows. You should not feel that you are failing a quiz if a museum is shut. The successful hinterland day ends with a swim or a pier walk so the trip still knows which coast it is on.
Maryborough is the complete half-day. Burrum Heads is the complete quiet night. Bauple and Brooweena are the complete “we like sheds” outing. Howard and Tuan are the complete pause. Stacking all of them in one Saturday is how you see nothing.
