K’gari permits and park rules, in ordinary English

K’gari is not a council car park with a pretty name. If you drive, you need a vehicle access permit from Queensland Parks before you enter. If you camp in a Parks camping area, you need a camping permit, displayed as Parks instructs. If you cross, you need a barge (or a tour, or a flight) that is not the same ticket as the permit.

The doors

Parks getting-there lists River Heads to Kingfisher Bay and Wanggoolba Creek (bookings required) and Inskip Point to Hook Point (generally no booking). Walk-on passengers exist. Your mainland hire car may be forbidden from the island — read the contract.

The animals and the alerts

Wongari (dingoes) are wild. Seasonal notices appear. Food storage and children are not optional colour. Track closures, burns, and barge-landing erosion have all featured in recent alerts. Check the week you travel.
