K'gari has no bridge. Every visitor arrives by water or air, and the way you get there shapes your whole visit. This guide compares the options, from guided day tours that handle everything to bringing your own four-wheel drive across on a barge.
We do not sell tours or publish prices or timetables. Barge and ferry schedules change with tides and seasons, so always check the current timetable with the operator and permit requirements with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).

Guided day tours from Hervey Bay
For most first-time visitors, a guided day tour is the simplest way to see K'gari. Tours typically include the ferry crossing, a four-wheel-drive bus or vehicle and a driver-guide. A common day might include:
- Central Station and the boardwalk along Wanggoolba Creek
- a swim at Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) or another lake
- a drive along Seventy-Five Mile Beach to Eli Creek and the Maheno shipwreck
It is a long day, often starting early and returning in the evening, and the island's sandy tracks are bumpy. Tours suit most ages, but check with the operator if you have back problems or are pregnant, because the ride can be rough.
Our K'gari day trip itinerary shows how a typical day flows.
Overnight and multi-day tours
An overnight stay changes the experience. You can see the lakes early before the day crowds arrive, reach further north to Indian Head and the Champagne Pools, and watch the stars without city light. Multi-day tours range from camping safaris to stays at the island's resort and accommodation in the small settlements.
Taking your own vehicle by barge
From River Heads
River Heads is about 20 minutes' drive south of Hervey Bay. Vehicle barges cross the Great Sandy Strait to Kingfisher Bay and Wanggoolba Creek on the island's western side. QPWS gives the crossing time as roughly 30 to 50 minutes, and bookings are required. From the western landings, inland sand tracks cross the island to the eastern beach.
From Inskip Point
Inskip Point, about 15 minutes' drive from Rainbow Beach, sits across a narrow channel from Hook Point at the island's southern tip. QPWS describes the crossing as about 10 minutes, with barges running through daylight hours and no booking needed. From Hook Point, you head north to the eastern beach. QPWS advises driving the beach around Hook Point only at low tide and recommends the Hook Point inland road. Inskip Point itself is a sandy peninsula that has experienced sudden erosion events, so check QPWS alerts for current access to the barge and camping areas.
Before you book a barge
- Book ahead in school holidays and on long weekends.
- Check the barge timetable against the tide times for your planned beach drive.
- Confirm that your vehicle and any trailer fit the barge's limits.
- Make sure your hire agreement allows the vehicle on sand and on K'gari.
Permits you need
QPWS requires:
- A vehicle access permit for every vehicle on the island (except those staying within the Kingfisher Bay Resort boundary), bought before you arrive. Number plates are recorded by cameras, and you must be able to show a digital or printed copy if asked.
- Camping permits for national park camping areas, booked in advance. Some sites are in fenced campgrounds to protect campers from dingoes.
Permits fund park management. Check the current rules and buy permits through the Queensland Government's parks booking service.
Passenger ferries and walking visits
Passenger ferries from River Heads serve Kingfisher Bay Resort on the western side. Guests can join resort-based tours, walk the resort's nature trails, and use the beach and jetty. This suits travellers who want to stay on the island without a vehicle.
Scenic flights
Scenic flights from Hervey Bay and other airports give a spectacular view of the lakes, sand blows and the eastern beach. In the whale season, flights may also offer views of humpbacks in the bay. Some operators land on the beach, which acts as a gazetted runway on parts of the eastern coast. Check the operator's inclusions and weather policy.
Which option is right for you?
- No 4WD and one day? Take a guided day tour from Hervey Bay.
- Want to see more without driving? Book an overnight tour or resort stay.
- Experienced off-road driver? Take your own 4WD by barge, with permits and a tide plan.
- Short on time or mobility? Consider a scenic flight.
Before you go
Read our guides to four-wheel driving on K'gari and dingo safety. The island is beautiful but remote: mobile coverage is limited, fuel and supplies are expensive and limited, and help can take time to arrive. The Fraser Coast hub explains how K'gari fits into a wider Fraser Coast trip.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do a day trip to K'gari from Hervey Bay?
Yes. Guided day tours leave Hervey Bay most days and include the ferry and a four-wheel-drive bus or vehicle on the island. It is a full day, usually visiting a lake, the rainforest and the eastern beach.
How do I get to K'gari from Hervey Bay?
Vehicle and passenger barges leave from River Heads, south of Hervey Bay, and cross the Great Sandy Strait to the island's western side. Passenger ferries also serve Kingfisher Bay Resort. Most visitors without a four-wheel drive join a tour.
Do I need a permit to drive on K'gari?
Yes. A vehicle access permit from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is required for any vehicle on the island, and camping permits are required for national park camping areas. Buy them before you travel.
Can I take a normal car to K'gari?
No. The island has no sealed roads; tracks and beaches are soft sand. You need a high-clearance four-wheel drive with low range, and many hire companies have specific rules about taking vehicles onto sand.
Which barge is closer, River Heads or Inskip Point?
River Heads suits visitors based in Hervey Bay and lands on the western side. Inskip Point, near Rainbow Beach, has a short crossing to the island's southern tip and suits travellers coming from the south or from Noosa.
