First visit to K’gari: day trip versus overnight

A first visit to K’gari fails in one of two ways. Either you treat a day trip as a failure because you did not collect every named lookout, or you treat overnight as mandatory when a well-run tour would have been enough. Choose the clock before you pay a deposit.

Daylight is a real trip

Between barge doors you have a working day, not a week. Queensland Parks lists River Heads (bookings, 30–50 minutes to Kingfisher Bay or Wanggoolba Creek) and Inskip Point to Hook Point (short crossing, generally no booking). Tours hold the navigation. Self-drive 4WDs hold the risk. A southern lake and a piece of rainforest or beach is a successful first day. Indian Head and the Champagne Pools sit on a longer, tide-dependent clock.

Overnight is dawn and the absence of panic

Stay if you want a lake at first light or an unhurried eastern-beach run. Two nights is when 75 Mile Beach stops feeling like a commute. You still need a vehicle access permit to drive, camping permits if you camp in Parks areas, and the current alert list.
