Planning your trip
The Fraser Coast hub brings everything together: what to see, how many days to allow and when to go.
Safety in brief
K'gari is remote and wild. Mobile coverage is patchy, help can take hours to arrive, and conditions on the beach change with every tide. Buy permits before you go, read the current conditions report, carry plenty of water, keep children within arm's reach because of dingoes, and swim only in the lakes and creeks, never in the surf on the eastern beach. On the mainland, swim between the flags at patrolled beaches and take care in the warmer stinger months.
Respecting Butchulla Country
The Butchulla people are the Traditional Owners of K'gari and much of the Fraser Coast. The island's name, K'gari, comes from Butchulla language. Respect cultural sites and signs, stay on marked tracks, take all rubbish with you and look for Butchulla-guided experiences, which offer a deeper understanding of the places you visit.
Getting help
In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000). For K'gari park information and to report dingo encounters, use the contacts on the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service website and signs on the island.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Fraser Coast?
The Fraser Coast is a region of Queensland north of the Sunshine Coast, centred on Hervey Bay and Maryborough and including K'gari (Fraser Island), the Great Sandy Strait and a string of small towns.
Is it called Fraser Island or K'gari?
The island's official name is now K'gari, the Butchulla name meaning paradise. You will still see Fraser Island used, often as K'gari (Fraser Island).
Why is K'gari famous?
K'gari is the world's largest sand island and is World Heritage listed for its natural values, including rainforest growing in sand, perched freshwater lakes and long sand blows.
How do I get to K'gari?
By vehicle barge from River Heads near Hervey Bay or Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach, by passenger ferry to the resort, on a guided tour, or by scenic flight.
Do I need a 4WD on K'gari?
Yes, if you are driving yourself. There are no sealed roads. Visitors without a 4WD can join guided tours or stay at the resort.
Do I need permits for K'gari?
Yes. A vehicle access permit is required for vehicles, and camping permits are required for national park camping areas. Buy them from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service before you travel.
Can you swim on K'gari?
Swim in the freshwater lakes, Eli Creek and the Champagne Pools. The eastern ocean beach is not safe for swimming because of strong currents and sharks.
Are dingoes dangerous on K'gari?
Dingoes are wild predators. Keep children within arm's reach, walk in groups, never feed dingoes and lock away food and rubbish.
When is whale season in Hervey Bay?
Humpback whales visit Hervey Bay during their migration. Tourism and Events Queensland describes the season as June to November, with most sightings from July to October.
Why is Hervey Bay good for whale watching?
The bay's calm, sheltered waters are a resting area for humpback whales, including mothers with calves, so encounters are often relaxed and close. Hervey Bay was named the world's first Whale Heritage Site in 2019.
Are Hervey Bay beaches safe for swimming?
The bay beaches are generally calm and shallow. Swim between the flags at patrolled beaches where available, and take care in the warmer stinger months.
How many days do I need on the Fraser Coast?
Three to five days suits most visitors, with at least one day on K'gari. Two days works for Hervey Bay and a K'gari day tour.
What is the best time to visit the Fraser Coast?
Winter and spring bring mild, drier weather and whale season. Summer is hot and humid with more storms and is the peak holiday period.
How far is Hervey Bay from Brisbane?
Roughly 290 kilometres, or about three and a half to four hours by car. Trains stop at Maryborough West with connections, and Hervey Bay has an airport.
What is there to do in Maryborough?
Walk the heritage streetscapes and riverfront, visit the museums, and look out for the Mary Poppins statue, a nod to author P. L. Travers, who was born in the city.
What are the best free things to do in Hervey Bay?
Walk the Esplanade and Urangan Pier, swim at calm beaches, visit the botanic gardens, enjoy sunsets over the water and browse local markets.
Can I do a day trip to K'gari?
